Our lovely daughter Cassie(the photographer) took our pictures last weekend. We were wet and cold but had a great time. Tomorrow she is taking pictures of Matt and I at the place where he proposed over 2 decades ago. =) I can't wait until we can get the whole family together for pictures...just have to get everyone in the same place at the same time. ;)

My thoughts on year round schooling

I have done the research and wanted year round schooling to work for us. I love the face that schooling this way allows for the month of December off as well as a week break every 5 weeks. I tried it and put everything I had into it. The problem is that we are just way too busy during the summer months. We are on the go almost every day. Now you could argue the fact that much of what we do could be considered educational. But, as far as lesson plans, book work and written work goes... Nada. Maybe because my kids are older it is more difficult. Ty works, has summer plans with friends as well as our family adventures. We have CAP activities, camping, rifle courses, Archery, weekly hikes,reunions, picnics, daycations ect... How do busy families make this work?

Breanna is always doing something creative, does that count? Ty meets new and interesting people at work as well as working the cash register, does that count? Open to ideas and suggestions because I really would love to school year round. =)

for neglecting my blog. Facebook is just so much easier. It is also a time waster. No matter how much of a limit I give myself, I find that I am on FB way too much. There are so many things I wanted to blog about over the summer. I am thinking of signing off of FB for good. Only problem with that is, I won't be able to see all my grand baby's beautiful pictures that Cassie post and I will also feel out of the loop. Such a dilemma. lol How do you deal with FB? What to do, what to do? I think I am going to stay off for a few days and see how much of a withdrawal I get and see how much more I can get done without the pull of FB. =) My goal is to blog weekly, like I did in the past. We shall see...

Happiness is a choice!

I overheard a conversation the other day that has been replaying over and over in my head. I know, I know I shouldn't have been listening, but I just couldn't help myself. A young mom was talking to another young mom about how unhappy she is. She was giving a long list of why she is so unhappy, such as not having enough money to go out, kids always mis-behaving, husband working too much to help out around the house... The typical trials of mommy-hood. While she is venting her beautiful toddler was sitting next to her eating his snack listening to his mommy complain, basically about him.Her ending words, were why can't I just be happy like everyone else? That got me thinking how many other moms feel the same way? Happiness is a verb. It takes action. You must decide to be happy. The more you dwell on the little inconveniences of everyday life, the unhappier you will feel.

I wanted to point out that yes, her husband is working long hours, but not for nothing. She was able to sit in a park with her girlfriend while her children played on a weekday. He was contributing much, if not in finances, at the very least the well being of his children. I remember some of those feelings when we were first married. I do not remember who told me, but I remember these words spoken to me very clearly: Happiness is a choice! YOU decide if you are going to be happy or not. As I grew as a christian I knew his to be very true. I start my day with thanks to the Lord and with a ready for anything attitude. Once I stopped focusing so much on my wants and desires and put my focus on the Lord and pleasing my husband and kids, it was EASY to feel happy. Watching the smiles of my children, the contentment of my husband and the joy in our household is worth so much more than my silly desires. What evidently happens is that those things BECOME your desires.
These are some of the things I would have liked to have said to this mom. Have you ever overheard a conversation that you wanted to "crash"? How did you handle it? Is it ever appropriate to intrude on a private conversation? Probably not, and unfortunately I have never been able to intrude gracefully. Until then I will just blog my two sense.

Big News!!!

I do have some homeschool related things to post. But first...I am a GRANDMA!!! Cassie girl had a sweet chunker monker weighing in at 9lbs 7oz and 30 inches long. Luella Rose Bailey entered this world at 7:21 yesterday evening. After roughly 15 hours of labor and nearly 3 hours of hard pushing, Cassie had to have a C-section. Ellie couldn't fit through Cassie's pelvic bone. Now we know why! Cassie did such a good job! She was smiling and joking with us in-between contractions and pushing. The nurses said they have never seen anything like it. Cassie's Faith and love for the Lord shines through even the toughest times.

I still can't believe I am a grandma! I am thinking Nonnie is more fitting for me, but I don't know yet. I don't want to regret not being called Grandma down the road. I am sure after spending more time with my precious Ellie, I will know. For now, I am just in my glory. Just look at her sweet cheeks! She looks just like Cass did when she was born. I also see a lot of daddy Josh too. I know this, she is one beautiful baby! =)

I found something wonderful on my book shelf!

When we moved from a 3,000 sq ft house to a 1,800 sq ft home two years ago, we had to give up our homeschool room. (I think I blogged about that a couple of years ago.) I love love love our cozy little "cottage". However, loosing the school room meant that I had to get creative. I had to separate book cases into 3 different rooms, use lots of pretty wicker baskets and I like to display our current reads on the buffet with relating objects. What I have found however, is that I was having trouble finding a living history book. I thought that I had organized the shelves pretty good: Piano room: Living books, Educational reads,Science, Social Studies, Daily Books and Binders. Living Room: Chapter books, Christian devotionals, magazines. Dining Room: Reference Books, Maps, Globe and current living history books. When I went in search for a book that should of been easy to find, I found a hot mess instead. So, out came the label maker! I labeled every shelf in chronological order and order of subjects. This took me half the day and made a big mess along the way moving books from one room to the other, but now I feel so much better! I know if I am looking for a particular time in history to go with our studies, I will find it!

Oh, what was the wonderful find? I found three amazing books that I must have purchased some time ago at a convention or something. They are The Light and Glory for Children (1492-1789), From Sea to Shining Sea for Children (1787-1837) and Sounding Forth the Temple (1837-1860) . Now, I think I everyone knows how much I love Story of the World and Heart of Dakota, however, I am in love with these books. I sat down to read just a chapter to see if it was a keeper or a giver awayer. lol. I ended up reading half the book. I should mention that Breanna is on a Civil Air Patrol Bivouac, so I did not feel guilty one bit. Anyway, what I feel that Story of the World series misses is right here in these books. The Gospel. I wouldn't say that SOTW is secular by any means, but certainly is not filled with God's relationships in History. We are going to continue or Ancient Histoy and Medieval History with SOTW because this series is only for American History. This series is written to capture your attention and brings history alive.! Anyway, I wanted to share my find and encourage all of you to reorganize your shelves if you haven't done so in a while, you never know what gem you may find!!

After years of homeschooling, one would think we would stick to just one curriculum. The truth is, that there are so many wonderful products out there, and every year new ones are added. I am going to list my favorites, ones I want to try and ones that just didn't work for us.

Favorites:

Heart of Dakota Heart of Dakota is so wonderfully put together that even the most scatterbrained, or should I say, too busy to plan, mom can do this. I used it flawlessly for two years. Last year a friend of mine let me borrow her Sonlight curriculum. (more on that later) What I like most about Heart of Dakota, is you literally can start teaching as soon as you get the box. Very little planning is needed and most of the project materials are found around the house. I also love that it is truly a Christ centered program. All the subjects flows nicely together. I do not feel that I need to pre screen the independent readers and read-alouds. If there is anything questionable, the publisher makes a note of it right in the guide. Let me talk about the guide. It is WONDERFUL. No loose leaf papers to copy and lose. You will have to go to the link to see what I mean. It is a book with a daily two page spread. You can teach multiple ages/grades with the guide also. There are add-on books for older children. I have not used it this way, but others have been blessed by the savings. I am trying to think of something that I do not like, but I truly cannot think of anything. The first year I bought the entire package with all the add-ons. The package price is comparable to Sonlight, maybe a little cheaper. I have since learned that you can find most of the books at the library, Christianbook, friends, and eBay. If you order your guide early you can have everything before the new school year begins. If you do not want to spend the time searching, and you can afford it, it is nice to just get everything shipped in one box. The time I spend looking for the books required, is still much less than all the lesson planning I would have to do my own. There is a nice chart on the website to find out which course your child should be doing. I know I have probably left out some important info, but you can always go to the site. There is a ton of information and even a forum.

Teaching Textbooks: One of my fears when we started homeschooling years ago was how was I going to teach math? Lets just say math has never been a strong subject of mine. I went straight to Saxon Math because that seemed to be the most popular. Our oldest did very well with Saxon, however, she also taught herself calculus using her fathers college text books. For Ty, who is a right brainer Saxon just caused alot of pain. for both of us. We had heard about Teaching Textbooks from a friend that also had traumatic experiences with Saxon. I am not a Saxon hater, just to be clear, but I am sure those of you that have math phobia know exactly what I am talking about. =) I found a great deal on eBay and am very happy that I did. My favorite part of this program is that there is little input if any needed from me. Ty and Bre both have done very well with this program. I will continue to use this. I have heard that if your child desires to become an engineerr, stick with Saxon. I think it is safe to say that none of my children has those desires. ;)

Apologia Science: Absolutely wonderful. I should note that I do not use the science offered in Heart of Dakota because of my love of Apologia. Not only are the text books and labs wonderful, you can get the text on audio and listen if you have an auditory learner. I ordered the DVD for Ty because the Biology labs are a bit more extensive. Year after year I am pleased with Apologia. It is a very thorough curriculum and I can relax knowing they are getting what they need out of it.

Story of the World: Remember when I said a friend let me borrow her 6th grade Sonlight curriculum? This was included. I love it. I also used the audio cd's to listen to the chapters on the road. After each chapter we would do a unit study. I also used the activity and test books. I like how it is written and you can take each subject matter and stretch it out however long you want. Bre really loved learning about ancient times, and we spent weeks studying Egypt. I love the flexibility of this. We really did not follow the Sonlight schedule because we would not have been able to do that. I also used Mystery of History along side of it. Anyhow, a very good program to use as a spine. I am struggling with wanting to continue with SOTW or go back to my beloved Heart of Dakota. If you and your child love history SOTW and Heart of Dakota fit the need.

Excellence in Writing Love this program. I have only used it with Breanna, and I am very impressed. She loves watching the lessons on DVD and her writing has improved greatly. I know families that do the program together and love doing it that way for the accountability factor.

Our baby turns 12!!

How is it that we are parents of a tween, teen and a pregnat married adult? For all of you that hear "It goes by so fast, enjoy them." THIS IS TRUE!! It seems that the years have flown by in a blink of an eye. Oh, I so love this new journey, but I do miss the sticky fingers stages as well. =) I plan on savoring these new memories as well and enjoying each new day and milestone.

Breanna, we are so very proud of you! You bring so much joy and happiness into our lives. You are our sunshine on a cloudy day! We love how you embrace every opportunity and challenge that comes your way. Happy 12th birthday sweet girl!! <3

I love our Co-op. We meet once a month for Art, Science, Creation, Apologia, Gym, Literature and now Dance/Drama for the end of year program. It is so wonderful to talk to other moms while the kids go about there day socializing and learning. I am so impressed with all of the kids that attend. They are so well mannered, friendly and just plain enjoyable. I think the most encouraging aspect of it is knowing that we are not perfect (Yes, we compare notes on all of our short comings ;) yet, we have these amazing children that love the Lord and their family with all their hearts. They have the freedom to be themselves, not one of a clique,each of them completely unique. They accept each other for who they are as individuals. We do not see girls on one side googly eyed for the boys, or the boys showing off. They all are friends. Simple. They enjoy being a child and relish everything childhood has to offer. Not one of these kids are in a rush to grow up. I just love it!! We have been part of this co-op for years, and I am so blessed to watch these kids grow and learn together. Here are a few pics of Bre in art class.

We have a ton of field trips coming up this Spring and can not wait! We are planning a trip to the Creation Museum in KY with other Homeschool families. We have been wanting to go since it opened. =) Although I appreciate winter because it is a season for diving into school work and unit studies, I love the Fall and Spring season so much more! Hands on learning is oh so much more fun. lol. Yes, I am the mom that will ditch the school day for a sunny day at the park . Know what? We still manage to get everything done before the end of the year. Relax and live a little. They grow up so very fast, make memories and enjoy life.

For the past three years Bre and Matt have had a special date. A Daddy Daughter Dance. A time to spend together all dressed up, a time to dance, to eat, to talk with other fathers and daughters, and to just have fun. I get to experience the fun too! I get to help Bre find a dress help her with her beautiful hair. Besides, I get to do fun and special things with her every day of every week. I love the fact that Bre and Matt have such a good relationship, he is the kind of dad that I wish I had growing up. =) He is also the husband I always dreamed of having... I am one BLESSED mama and wife. <3

My mom blessed me with a iPad for Christmas, so I thought I would share my favorite apps with you all. I am normally a paper and pen girl and anti-electronic. BUT, I LOVE my iPad. It has taken my organize -ation addictions to a whole new and wonderful level. I have, dare I say it? eliminated my homemaking binder as well as my homeschool binder. You all know what a binder junkie I am! No, I did not throw them out. I just shelved them. ;) I have pages of very useful (and some not) foldersI will start with my top five favorites:

2Do (6.99)- http://2doapp.com/en/2Do/features.html This is my most used app. it contains color coded folders for each of my daily tasks. In my homeschool folder I add things such as lesson plan ideas, books to read, to-do's such as grade papers and fill out field trip registrations. I can put a dead line date and be alerted when it is due. This is amazing for this paper and pen girl, I have to tell ya. It is out of my head and I don't have to worry about it. I have always been a super fan of lists and this takes it to a whole new level. In my household folder I have my daily list of chores, menu planning, emails and phone calls to make. The best part for me is to see items checked and crossed off. Oh, the feeling of accomplishment. =) In my finance folder I have bills with due dates inputted for reminders. I have a Civil Air Patrol folder to remind myself of what needs to be done weekly. I have an Awana folder that is currently empty, but it's there if I need it. ;) I have a fieldtrip folder for ideas and upcoming fieldtrips. I also have a baby shower folder for ideas and things to buy for Cassie's upcoming baby shower and last but not least, I have a shopping list folder. I do have other shopping list apps, but I just love having everything I need in one place. Next to my folders is a handy calendar. Yes, this is definitely one of if not my favorite app. Worth the price!

MyNetDiary: (9.99) http://www.mynetdiary.com/index.html This app has helped me shed 8 pounds so far. I log everything I eat and it tells me how many calories I have left to consume. I also log my daily exercises, and it motivates me to keep on logging. The handy weight loss tracker/ progress chart with a visual graph is nice too.. I use this daily. Love it.

HomeRoutine: (2.99) http://www.homeroutines.com/ If you love FlyLady.com, this app is for you. I have not used it as much because I am still in love with my 2Do app. I can see that it is a very useful app and I will definitely use. Like I said if you love Flylady, you will love this app. It even has zones!!

iHomework: (1.99) http://ihomework.pilone.org/iOS.html This app is intended for college students but has adapted very well for homeschooling. I love it. I inputted all of our courses complete with our schedule and assignments. It is also a great reading and grades tracker. I add our weekly lessons on Saturdays and I am not fumbling with my huge binder. LOVE IT!

GroovyGrader:(free) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/groovy-grader/id376433959?mt=8 This takes the guess work out of calculating grade percentages. Very useful.

FighterVerse (1.99): http://www.fighterverses.com/product/iphone-ipad-app/ This app is has helped Bre memorize her Awana verses immensely! You add the verse and then click study and it takes out words and you have to fill them in. It starts out easy and gets harder until you master the verse. Very useful for Bible memorization.

AllrecipesPro (2.99): http://allrecipes.com/features/more/iphone.aspx Of all my recipe apps, I like this one best. Very visual and search friendly. I talk more about my other favorite recipe apps later.

Netflix: Netflix is great! If you already have an account just log in and watch movies anywhere right on your iPad. Love it!

I have so many more that I want to talk about. I have a folder for each school subject with handy educational apps in each one. Of course I also have a games folder and a medical folder. I have a folder for everything! lol. I will talk more about them later. I do not want to overwhelm you.

It has been so long since I posted last that I don't think that I told ya'all some very important news!! My Cassie is having a baby!! She is alomost 20 weeks along. Matt and I are very excited. Cassie and Josh are going to be wonderful parents. I can't wait to experience grandmotherhood. =)

I am so sorry for not updating lately. Our home is filled with fun filled busy days. December is our "down" month. We school 2-3 days a week, and focus on family, friends and the true meaning of the season. We started this last year and found that the kids did not "fall behind" at all. If anything we ALL feel rejuvenated and ready to tackle lessons and projects throughout the winter. Here are a few pictures of our month. I have been using my cell phone because my digital bit the dust, so sorry for the poor quality.

A day at the park with Bre

Matt and Ty had CAP plans so Bre and I decided to head to the park. I have made an effort to spend quality time with each of them. Simple trips to the store alone with one child can foster such a bond and enable you to connect which is almost impossible with two or more at once. Even at 11 and almost 16 they will "vie" for my attention when we all go to the store together. I also like to have lunch dates with each of them once a month. I really try to listen to what they are saying and pick up on any clues if there are issues that may need to be addressed. We talk about important things, silly things and just enjoy being together. Even though some alone shopping time for myself would be a nice break, I know I am enriching my children's lives with love and importance. Not only are they blessed but I am as well. I TRULY know my children and love to be around them.That is much more important than an hour or two of alone time.

On this particular day Bre and I played games, went for a nice walk, "played" in the water, played on the playground and just enjoyed each other and the beautiful nature that surrounded us.

It was very cool that Matt AKA: DAD(Lt.Mallory) was able to be the one to promote him. I am so proud of my favorite men. Sometimes I may grumble about all the time that they dedicate to the Civil Air Patrol, but I have witnessed with my own eyes all the benefits that are gleened from it. I guess I will have to keep my grumblings to myself eh?

My baby turned 11!!

My sweet, funny,artistic,joyful,loving,creative,energetic,adorable,lovable...(that's only a few adjectives to describe her wonderfulness!) baby turned 11!!! Because our house is small we decided to have her friends only party elsewhere. She chose Laser Tag, and had a blast. Josh and Cassie came over for her family party, which was very nice. I miss my Cassie girl and love it when we are able to spend time together. Cassie brought her bible study binder with her and shared some things that her group is studying. It does my heart good to see her grow in the spirit and have a group of wonderful christian women to learn and share with. Whenever my children have a birthday I am reminded how blessed I truly am. Not that I am not aware of this everyday, it is just a good time for reflection of another year past. It is important not to dwell on all the little annoyances that occur on a daily basis. I thank God every single day for my wonderful family, they make me feel so loved and I cherish each of them equally.

For the past two years, I have been unable to participate in one of my very favorite activities: hiking. Since neck surgery in Oct. I feel so much better. Not 100% just yet, but well enough to venture on a 3 mile hike. 1 1/2 of that at an incline to a beautiful overlook. Here are a few pics. I was challenged. I was blessed to have my avid runner friend there to encourage me. I almost gave up at one point. She reminded me that all things can be done through Christ! Woo, how could I quit with that? Amen!

We had a wonderful day celebrating the Resurrection of Jesus. I try to keep the reason for celebrating very clear. We did color eggs, because that has been our family tradition for years, but we also made resurrection rolls, that told the story of the Resurrection. We do not do baskets anymore. Too many trips to the dentist. ;) We do give the kids small treats and a movie. See, I am not a total meanie. ;)

We had a very nice visit with my in-laws, dinner was great, then us girls went for a walk while the guys played with the bb guns. I missed spending Easter with my mom, Cass and Josh but my mom hasn't been feeling well and wasn't up for a big dinner.We like to split up the holidays between our families. However, with Cass married we would like to start having holiday dinners here at our home and all would be welcome. I would love to see all of our families celebrating together in one place. I do not have a ton of space, but I will somehow make it work. Families are meant to be united through marriage, so let's unite people! lol. I hope you all had a wonderful ressurection Sunday! Today was the nicest day of the year so far. Ty helped Matt with an attena installation, so I had planned on doing school in the afternoon. Well, we played hookey instead. I just could not get Bre to focus, as she stared dreamily outside. She is my nature girl, much like I was at her age. I remember sitting in PS doing the same thing, not listening to the teachr, just day dreaming about what I would rather be doing outside. I thought to myself, "why bother, isn't this supposed to be one of the many advantages of homeschooling anyway?" It's not like we are going to "fall behind" because we want to enjoy the out of doors for a day, right?

I opened all the windows and was able to get some needed cleaning done while Bre played out back. She scetched a tree and a bird, drew hopscotch squares on the driveway pavement, made mud pies and branch stew and made a fort out of plywood and garbage bags. She used her imagination. In my book, that is worth more than workbooks and such.

My neighbor is a school teacher, so I always check to see if her car is in the driveway before we go outside during "school hours" WHY, do I feel the need to do this? I mean, I send in all the required documents, teach dilligently, go on fieldtrips ect.., overall, I know our kids are getting a well rounded education in a loving enviroment, so why, oh why, do I still worry about what the neighbors think? I just hate that about myself. I really should not care about what others think of us, as long as we are pleasing to the Lord. So what if they think us strange, I would rather be strange than live in their world, so WHY DO I CARE? ugh. Sorry for the rant, I just don't get it. I am an intelligent (at least I like to think so) woman of God who loves her family and is secure in her life and life choices, this is why it bugs me so much. I know better! I have been praying for peace in this area for years. I have gotten better, just not 100 % there yet. This scripture comes to mind as I type this: Thou will keep perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee. Isa 26:3

Ranting aside, it was a beautiful homeschool day, we may not have "hit the books" but it was still a learning day filled with fresh air and beautiful imagination. I pray you all had a wonderful spring day also!

Misplaced Time

I have been noticing more and more that I have many things left on my to-do list and it keeps getting longer. So, I started to log my activities to find out why that is. I really didn't need to do that because I already really knew, the number one culprtit-Facebook. Why is it so alluring? I mean most of what I read is non-essential crapola. Most of which I really do not want or need to know. I just do not understand why I continue to waste time on there. I even did a FB fast for a week. I did have most of my list done that week, but I kept thinking about FB and wondering what everyone was up to. Ugh. I think I may need Dr.Phil or something. lol. Just kidding. Kinda. I do need to reprioritize however. Yes, we are getting school done, yes, my house is "mostly" clean, laundry is sorta done. BUT, I used to take pride in all those things and really enjoy making my house a home and finding joy in the little things.

Now that I have admitted my little problem, (that is the first step right?) I am going to set a timer whenever I get online, for whatever reason. This sounds elementary I am sure, but whatever works right? I need to be accountable and I am hoping that will help. I have also been slacking on my blog *sorry*.

Now that I have found my misplaced time, I am going to cherish it much more. =)

I am also going to start posting our week-at-a-glance again and menu planning. Now, that is time well spent, right?

Happy New Year everyone! So many new and exciting events have occured since I have last blogged. I was lying in bed last night feeling a bit guilty for not updating. I realized that Face Book is my problem. Well, I am the problem. but I have let FB distract me ALOT. I have decide to do a FB fast! A little drastic you may think. However, I am already having withdrawl symptoms, how's that for drastic? lol. Let's see, where to begin? So much to tell...

* My baby girl got married January 1st!! I am still getting used to it and still missing her so much. She lives about 2 hours away and feels so much farther. I miss hearing her in the mornings and our girl nights. We still talk everyday and we are going out to lunch Wed. :) Yes, I am going to post photos. She was the most beautiful bride I ever saw.

* My Sis-in-Law and niece came to stay from CA for three weeks. Brittany was a flower girl in the wedding. So much fun! I miss them lots too!!

* I finally can DRIVE!!! YAY!!! I have a new van to boot! Woo Hoo! Yes, I am feeling very blessed! <3

* I am going to Physical Therapy and feeling better and stronger every day! Next week I start water aerobics to try to get this weight off before summer!

So, you could say that this is very good start to a new year!! I am going to try to be good and blog every week. hahaha.

I know I haven't blogged here in awhile, I do have good reason however. :) I had the surgery finally!(10/16/08) I am still recovering and still in allot of pain, but I am looking forward to felling better and getting on with life. I should start feeling human again in the next 2-4 weeks and hopefully as good as I was before the accident 6 months to a year. I know that seems so far off, but I now can look forward to feeling like myself again. I cannot sit here and type for long as it is painful to do so, so I am going to throw some pictures up to hopefully appease those of you that have emailed me wondering where I disappeared to. :)

School Update: We are right on target, I spent a couple of hours each week all through the summer preparing that I would be having surgery. I have lesson plans and unit studies finished all the way until January. The first two weeks of recovery, I didn't do any teaching. The kids had their daily plan books and completed all the independent lessons required. Matt not only took the kids to all their lessons, appointments and such, he helped the kids with their schooling that they couldn't do on their own. I got my voice back on the 2nd week and was able to do allot of read alouds. We went through double the literature than I anticipated for this quarter. lol. Matt is still driving the kids and I everywhere we need to go, but I am happily back to doing all the teaching. He signed the kids up for a government class. It is a 5 week class and he is going to take the class with them. He is so resourceful, I do not know what I would do without him and I thank God everyday for giving me such a blessing. :)

I am trying to squeeze all the Autumn activities in, that I can before my surgery next week. I am so thankful that the weather has been very favorable for our outings. We are apple picking Sunday, so I pray that we get a few more beautiful days. I love everything about the fall and I am going to enjoy every minute of it!! Before you know it my least favorite season will be here, and I hear this winter is going to be a doozy. Oh well, we can at least spend allot of time doing unit studies and projects. School is going better than expected, every year it just gets better and better! Bre has a busy schedule this year between gymnastics and piano on top of Science and Art Co-op. Ty and Bre are both looking forward to Mandy's science classes as well as Patty's art sessions. I am sure we will have many more pictures to post these next few weeks. I love using smilebox because it is so simple and cool. I am not sure how long my recovery time is going to be, so I cannot promise to be blogging away, but I do hope to at least spend a little time updating and posting pictures. Our Van is now working-Woo-Hoo! Back to civilization. :) Pastor was here until 9:30 monday night helping Matt take out the gas tank, Matt and Ty replaced the fule pump yesterday and it worked! Again, I want to thank our friends,Pastor, and my mom for their help!! Love you all and appreciate it very much!!

My Best Friends husband has been here all day trying to help Matt fix our one and only piece of transportation. I am praying that something works, and it is not costly. I am very grateful to Geoff and Mandy for all of their help! Again. :) Please pray that it works, Matts work requires him to travel. Thank you. :)

On a happy note, we had a wonderful day AT HOME yesterday! lol. Because we were unable to drive anywhere we just made the best of it. It seems that every weekend we are busy going here and there. It was nice to have a quiet Saturday afternoon. Matt played Bball with the kids, went for a walk and watched family movies, and to my horror watched Bre climb a 20 foot tree!!! Matt said she is fine, we did it when we were kids. True, but I still made her wear her helmet. lol. :)

Friday was a super busy day with housework, schooling then afternoon appointments. Ty and Bre had their schoolwork done before 1:30 as has been common, so I left them to their free time while Matt took me to my appointment. Boy was I surprised when I got home. I had reminded them of their few afternoon chores,and that I would like them to be done before I returned. Well, not only did they do their share of chores-they did mine! The did all the laundry- including folding and put into perspective rooms! I love a tidy house and I think I do a pretty good job of keeping it clean, not as well as I used to since the accident, but neat and tidy as can be. One problem I do seem to have is always having at least three loads of laundry to be done on any given day. So, this was a SUPER blessing! Not only did they take care of the laundry, they also cleaned the laundry area in the basement. I am just very excited that this was done without any prompting whats so ever. They worked together and got it done. I am so proud. I still haven't figured out just HOW they got it done that quickly, but I am very happy. :)

SpellQuizzer Review and Giveaway

I often give my reviews on books and products and give my honest opinions. As a homeschool mom, I often rely on other like-minded mom's opinions before I make a purchase. With that in mind, I can assure you that I am giving you an honest review.

SpellQuizzer has made our spelling lessons easier on myself and fun for the kids. Breanna whom started 5th grade this year has noticed that her spelling words are more difficult. As you know, we are mostly a CM homeschool, the majority of the spelling words come from our literature. Because we do not read twaddle books, the words are more complex and harder to spell than your typical textbook spelling list. With SpellQuizzer I have the freedom to input my own words and make an audio of them. Breanna then logs on and hears her spelling words that I have recorded, she then types in the word to find out if she was correct or not. She likes it because I record the words in my goofy voice. Remember, we do not like boring. ;)
If you do not like to make your own spelling list, you can use one of theirs. It is virtually an easy to navigate and understand program, to make things more simple for you as well as your child.
You can download the free trial for 30 days to see if it is something you want to use. I think you will be as pleasantly surprised as I was, just how such an uncomplicated tool is so useful. I also use the words that I created for copywork. The one thing I would like to see in this program is a progress report. However, as a Homeschool Mom I can clearly see how well she is doing with the program just as it is. Remember leave me a comment if you would like to participate in the giveaway. Finally have a surgery date

I finally have a surgery date for my neck. October 16th. I have been waiting for this, for I want to feel at least a little bit like my old self again. Yet, I am very nervous about it. I am meditating on the word and having faith that it will be a successful surgery so that I can be the mom and wife that my family deserves. The things that the kids miss the most is all the fun stuff we used to do: Bike riding, dancing silly around the house, long hiking trips, long car rides to fun places,to just name a few. I feel so bad.
So, the surgery IS a good thing, if I can get some of my life back. I thank God every day for my family and my blessings.

Teaching the Trivium

I have just finished reading Teaching the Trivium a couple of weeks ago. We had a wonderful weekend at a lodge and it was wonderful just to rest and enjoy the end of summer. I absolutely LOVE this book. It is extremely well written and is full of wisdom and inspiration. The chapters fulfilled every desire and it was if it finally "clicked". I have been praying on a different way to homeschool and I love the CM method. Teaching the Trivium has given me ways to incorporate CM and Christian Classical together. Although we are definitely more of a CM homeschool, I will use the suggestions and tools in this book to compliment our techniques and style. I had planned on passing this book to a friend that was admiring it while I was reading it. However, I think this is a lifer. I think I will always use it as a reference. I am going to bless my friend with her very own copy for her shelf. Definitely worth the cost.

Back to School

We started back to {home} school yesterday. We had a great start. We usually spent the first day getting back into routine and going over the "schedule". However, because we are completely CM now, the kids jumped right in. We started with our early morning walk, about an hour long. We found the source of our early morning alarm: a family of blue jays! They are so beautiful to watch, albeit loud. Ty has Internet on his phone so we were able to do a bit of research on them and the "noises" they make. When we first moved in, I thought a family with a small child must have an early riser that likes to swing. That is the call of a blue jay.

INTERESTING FACTS
*The Blue Jay's coloration is not derived by pigments, but is the result of light refraction due to the internal structure of the feathers; if a Blue Jay feather is crushed, the blue disappears as the structure is destroyed.
*They will sometimes prey on eggs and nestlings of other birds’ nests.
*Captive jays have been observed using tools and strips of newspaper to rake in food pellets from outside their cages.
*A group of jays has many collective nouns, including a "band", "cast", "party", and "scold" of jays.

After our walk the kids and I made breakfast and started our morning chores. We finished up our lessons around 2:30, then we made yummy peanut butter balls. We finished the afternoon with readalouds while we enjoyed our snack. Overall, we had a delightful day and all work was completed with happy hearts. I could not ask for more.

Today, we started with our morning walk that included daddy and the dogs. We didn't linger long for we started out late, but still had a good 45 minute walk and exploration. We started off strong with morning work and bible study. We are using Mystery of History vol 1, for our bible curriculum. After each lesson is an activity. For today's activity the kids were to make Adam, Eve or animals out of clay. I thought they would spend about a half hour on this. Nada. They became inspired to create clay animations with the video camera and spent 3 hours on it. The finished project was amazing. I will post it later, if I can figure it out. lol. We did get to math and grammar. This is what I love about homeschooling. They were able to work together as a team and be creative, without interruptions of a harried schedule. They still completed their core work, yet were able to enjoy what interested them. Even my techno geek husband was impressed with the finished project. I love homeschooling. It is days like yesterday and today that make all the "other stuff" worth it. I guess I won't be flagging down the yellow bus after all...

Wow! Has it really been THAT long?

I guess it has. A whole summer without blogging. In my defense, it has been a very busy summer indeed! Beginning with a move...yet again. Our "old" house that we loved we found covered in mold in the attic. We found this, after Breanna's asthma was acting up very badly and she became very ill. Only through a process of elimination with her Dr. did we suspect mold. Anyway, we have moved out and settled into our new home. Much smaller, very country-cottagey. We went from almost 3,000 square feet to 1,500 square feet. I also lost a school room. :( I have always had a school room. But, you know what? We all feel so much better, knowing Bre is healthy. I also have somehow, managed to fit all of our homeschool stuff around the house, and it doesn't look to cluttered. At least that is what I tell myself. ;)
I have been getting stuff ready for school and have cluttered up the dining room a bit-but hey, we are a homeschool family after all. I thought I would have had my surgery by now. I really wanted it before school season started. Between insurance and scheduling with specialist, I will not have the surgery until sometime in October. Oh well. something good did come out of it- I completed an entire years worth of lesson plans for Ty and Bre in fear that I was going to have the surgery and not "feel" like planning. I am a way over planner. :)
I have a ton of pictures to upload-hopefully sometime this week. I have to pace myself due to the neck and back injury, but I seem to do ok, if I keep to a schedule and pace myself. I couldn't imagine being in this much pain and managing a household if I had very little ones to take care of. I am a very blessed mom and wife to have such a wonderful family. Well, I am off to make dinner. I will be back soon. I promise. ;)

How Does Your Garden Grow?

We have enjoyed and loved a vegetable garden for the past few years. Matt had a huge garden box built at our old house that housed all of our much loved vegetables. We do not have one here, and Matt doesn't have the time to build one this season. I was afraid that I wouldn't have a garden this year. No fear, Matt and Bre planted carrots, squash, peas, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers and green beans a few weeks back into huge garden pots. These are lined up on our back deck and Breanna faithfully waters them every morning. No matter how long you have been gardening it is always a thrill to see your garden sprout and grow. I cannot wait to make a yummy salad fresh from our "garden".

MRI Results

My Dr. called with my MRI results and he said that I have numerous herniation and bulging discs. He is setting up an appointment with a Nero surgeon. I have resolved to go ahead with surgery if this surgeon also suggests it. I realized that I have stopped doing all the things I was before because of the pain. I haven't even gotten my bike out, because it hurts too much. I know from experience that surgery can help, so prolonging it is only putting my active life on hold longer. I prayed about it and have complete peace with this decision.

On a lighter note, I have to comment on Heart of Dakota Curriculum. Bre was already finished with most of her 2008-09 curriculum, so knowing that I have a box full of new beautiful books and a different system made be anxious to try. :)
We are on day 6 Unit 1 and LOVE it!!! I only wish I had this when we first started. I absolutely am in love with this program. It is easy to follow, FUN, and the lessons are in bite sized chunks that allows us the freedom to do other fun school things. Bre even WANTS to do school all summer. I will post some pics of some of the work she has done soon! My only wish is that Carrie- the creator of this program would make one for Highschoolers. :) Ty listens in on Bre's lessons sometimes and I can see that he likes it. The living books that Carrie has chosen are perfect and engaging. I have been having Ty sit it on the read alouds because they are so interesting. First, I want to thank you all that have prayed for my mom! When Satan seeks to destroy, God restores! Amen. She went to the oncologist this morning regarding the large mass in her neck. The diagnosis- all the surgeries she had on her thyroid and such cause her muscles to get irritated. Basically a huge muscle spasm in her neck.we are so relieved. Thank You Jesus!!
I just wanted to let you all know, ot I can go on with our day happily. :)

Today

I had my MRI today. I assumed when they made the appointment that their notes would indicate that I am a bit claustrophobic and require an open MRI. I assumed wrong. I have gained weight since the last one and with it being a closed MRI machine I felt squeezed and very claustrophobic. I managed. I prayed and listened to Christian pop. They have Sirius radio and gave me a list with different music with corresponding numbers. I was so nervous before the procedure that I just kept repeating number 32 in my head, so I wouldn't forget. More likely to focus on something other than what was to come. It didn't take long, it was loud and annoying, but with Mercy Me playing and my eyes closed I made it.
The first MRI I had was closed (years ago), Matt was with in the room with me when I panicked. I remember flipping out and yelling for them to take me out. Not quite the composure you would expect from me, is it? Well, I was rescheduled for an open MRI, which was much better. This time I wouldn't let Matt in with me because I said I would be more of a baby if I knew he was there in the room. It is a good thing that he waited in the waiting room, because once I found that it was a closed I could feel myself getting panicky. I prayed and immediately felt at ease. Knowing that God was there with me, made me feel so much better. Now I wait for the results. I already know that I have herniation and surgery was requested, but we will see. I will make my decision based on this new one.
We finished school early (before MRI) while we were gone the kids did some science experiments. When I got home, I was so tired ( probably emotionally) that I took a two hour nap. I do not nap, ever during the week days. Sometimes on Sundays, after church I will but not often. I can not believe how long I slept.
For Home Ec. I have given Cassie the task of creating a menu for the week, find recipes, do an inventory on items she may need that we already have, and to create a shopping list. She took it one step forward today, because I was so tired she offered to go to the store and get groceries. Now, normally I would have probably objected because that is "my thing". Yet as tired as I was, I jumped on the offer, besides it is good practice for her being that she will be running her own household soon. She did a great job, and even made homemade pizza for dinner and pudding for dessert. Overall, even with the MRI and all, it was a great day. :)

Little Miss Breanna

If you have been reading this blog lately, you know that I am experiencing "growing pains" Entering into a new phase of life with my children. Little by little each day Breanna has been asking more questions about growing up and getting more moody since en. Yes, puberty has begun. She tells me that she doesn't know her own body and her thoughts do not feel like her own. Now, when I was her age I couldn't put those feeling into words as well as she did. I remember feeling like something from a sci-fi movie was taking over my body.
She is going through the crazy hormones that make you want to laugh hysterically only to cry 30 seconds later. She asked me to pray for her and to please tell her exactly when this will stop. For this question I can not awnser for I still ask that same question for myself at the age of 34. :)

I purchased The Body Book It's a God Thing! by Nancy N. Rue. It answers questions in a christian perspective. She is doing better, however, her poor brother is not. He thinks she is crazy and wants to know what is wrong with her. Every night when I tuck her in and pray Ty always comes in to say goodnight. Well, the other night she yelled at him to get out! He looked so confused. Later, I had to tell him that she is starting puberty and he should expect her to be a bit moody. well, he refuses to believe that- his words not mine. He said his little sister is NOT going to like boys and get weird. They have been buddies for a long time. Sure they bicker and argue, but because she has always been a bit of a tomboy they have been pals. I feel bad for him, in a way he is loosing one of his best friends. I told him that he has a new responsibility to his sister now. He needs to protect her and watch out for her in a new way. I think that helped a bit, because Ty has a natural protective nature.

I always have tea at night when all is quite and I feel accomplished (at least somewhat). Bre has of late been asking to join me. So, I have decided to embrace that and her new phase in life. I ordered this beautiful tea set for two and devotional for her and I to have special tea time once a week. I look forward to this time to bond and share the word together. I Keep going back to Cassie at this age. I truly did not see It coming with her. It was like one day she was a little girl and the next a hormone raged teenager. I honestly believe that if Cass were homeschooled at this age, I wouldn't have missed it and could have embraced the transition with her. Don't get me wrong Cassie and I had/have a wonderful and beautiful relationship, I only wish that I could have savored her youth longer. I remember Cassie and I going out lunch to celebrate her time. Her walk into womanhood, or in her case her jog into womanhood. I am so blessed that God has given me these wonderful children to look after. Cassie and I often talk about how our life would have been different if we all didn't become saved when she was 13. Since we started walking in Faith and living as Christians our lives have been so enriched and blessed. Even trials are so much easier to go through. I thank God every single day for revealing himself to us all at the same time, so that we all grew/grow at the same time. It is so awesome to feel as excited about life and the Lord together! When one of us gets down or have a struggle we are here for each other to lift and encourage, with Gods word and prayer. I hope that I am not painting a picture that this house is always in perfect harmony. Let's be real. What I am saying is that since becoming evangelistic Christians there is less chaos and confusion. Know what I mean? We are still flesh and act fleshy sometimes, it's just nice to have each other to remind us of God's unfailing love and forgiveness.

You know, lately I have been posting very looong posts. I honestly do not plan to, it just comes from my heart. I used to write everything in a journal and scrapbook, but this is so much better. I hope someday the kids will appreciate me posting their antics. ;)

Prayer Request

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I ask that you pray in agreement with me for my mom. She has a mass in her neck and has an appointment with an oncologist for a biopsy. The Lord has carried her through many trials and illnesses. For those of you that do not know her, her name is Kari. She is a strong woman of Faith and I am meditating on this scripture: Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Another healing verse: III John 2 – Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.
I have to admit that I have a hard time facing illnesses with people that I love and are close to me. I want to cry and get mad, yet I know that God is in control of all, even things we do not understand. I pray that God gives me the wisdom and strength to be the daughter that she needs me to be at this time.

Curriculum for Next Year

I am excited to say that after 5 years of homeschooling I can finally define our homeschool style. I have always declared that we are eclectic homeschoolers, and although that is absolutely true we really just didn't find our niche. This year we put our textbooks aside and started doing unit studies and reading living books. Both kids are happier and enjoying school even more! With that said our main method is the Charlotte Mason Method :
A method of education popular with homeschoolers in which children are taught as whole persons through a wide range of interesting living books, firsthand experiences, and good habits.
I was ordering some books and dvd's at christianbook.com when I stumbled on a Heart of Dakota manual. I was interested and googled HOD only to find the best curriculum I have ever researched. I ordered Breanna's for next year and it arrived within three days! I love the manual (remember I do not like boxed curriculum) and the wonderful living books! I will take a picture of it all ans post it later. It was a bit confusing at first what I was supposed to order, then I found the message board and the ladies on there helped me figure it all out. This curriculum is not overwhelming, yet covers each subject in such a way that will enrich their minds. If I were to write out a curriculum perfect for me, this would be it. I can not tell you how excited I am. I never get excited over "boxed" curriculum. ever. This is different though. The books are not textbooks, they are living books and the manual is very flexible and easy to follow. I can supplement as I wish and I know if I do not Bre will still be learning enough. I love putting together unit studies, but sometimes worry if I am doing enough. Not to mention how time consuming it can be. Carrie (author/creator of HOD) has taken all the doubt out of my mind. Basically the manual itself is based on Unit studies. She has integrated all the subjects to mesh into each other, so the kids get a very well rounded understanding of the subject(s). I just love it! Can you tell? Check out the website here: http://www.heartofdakota.com/ If I were to compare it to another curriculum I would say My Fathers World or sonlight only easier on mom. :) I know I will be supplementing with T4L and other great programs, however this is a very enriching curriculum for families that love the Charlotte Mason approach. There ya go, after all these years I said I wouldn't put a label on our Homeschooling style, I just did. We just kind of integrated to this without even realizing it and we all love it. The best part is that I can read living books to both kids and just customize to their levels and needs. I am a more hands on homeschool mom, and I want to stress that HOD fits that bill. T4L is great for supplementing or when I am ill or have appointments and such. The both together are going to make for another fabulous homeschool year! You know it's great when you AND the kids get excited to see the UPS truck delivering yet MORE books!

New Phase in Life

I am beginning to see a pattern, a new phase if you will in my life as I know it. I'm not sure that I like it. However, I know it is a completely natural and Godly thing. (Ephesians 5:21-6:4) We are to raise up our children and let them go.
My "oldest baby" is getting married next year, my son is planning his career to join the military and my baby baby is going through pre-puberty. My once tom boy is starting to shed away her little girl shell and becoming a young lady. She is asking questions that I thought I wouldn't have to awnser in quite some time simply because of her nature. Here is a funny and sweet story. Anyone that knows Bre knows that she is NOT a girly girl if you will. Just read previous posts. I have noticed though that lately she is taking more care in choosing her outfits for the day. :)
Anyway, Bre is a saver, (in money as well as in souls. ;)) She received some money for her birthday a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't surprised when I saw that she brought her wallet to the store today, because she is always in need of art supplies. However, she asked if we could look at the necklaces. I swallowed my heart- I thought to myself "this is really happening she is completely changing and growing up before my eyes." You have to know Bre to know where I am coming from-She protest ANYTHING girly-she absolutely despises Brats and Barbies and she would rather NOT wear a dress, even to Church. I do know that this will someday change, but I must admit that I count my blessings that she is not in a rush to grow up. Cassie, my sweet and sassy one, grew up it seems too fast. She always did everything before her peers, walk, talk, finish school early and everything in between. I have enjoyed and cherished watching her become the wonderful young woman that she is. She has always been an over achiever and I am not surprised that she is excited about starting a family of her own. She has been watching me cook and is starting to make her favorite meals in preparation for her own household. I have created a Huge Household Manager Binder for myself a few years back. Cassie has asked me to make one for her. I think I will just give her mine, since I really do not look at it much anymore anyhow.
I feel super blessed to have such strong bonds with both of my girls whom are so completely different from each other. Now, I am not purposely leaving Ty out, but this is a story about my girls. I will say that being the middle child between two very different complex girls makes very good future husband material wouldn't you say? :)
Wow, I am going off track here. Where was I? Walmart with Bre. So, I took her over to the necklaces and watched her ooh and ahh over the different styles. Meanwhile, I am asking God (in my head of course) why he didn't give me a fore warning that my little girl was changing so suddenly. I mean, I had not one clue! Anyway, She picked out a beautiful turquoise heart pendant. She paid for it herself and talked to the cashier about how pretty she thinks it is and how she can't wait to wear it. I am just looking at her like "who are you??" I have no problem with girly girls-I am one- It is just shocking to witness your child change overnight. So, I strike up a convo on the way home, asking her why she chose that particular color and what she is going to wear it with. She professes that she is not sure but she just had to have it. I though ok, I understand that. :)
After taking care of groceries with Cassie's help Bre said she wanted to give me my Mother's Day present early. You know where I am going with this don't you? Well let me finish. I unwrap (a very nicely wrapped I might add) the most beautiful turquoise heart necklace that I have ever saw! :) She planned and plotted the whole thing!! Now that is the Beannie that I know. I am very touched at her little scheming and very blessed that I still have my little girl as I know her right now, for a little longer. I can only imagine God laughing at me, he does have quite the sense of humor does he not? Do you think that this is my fore warning. ;)

So, I am trying to not be saddened over children growing up and being the mommy that is always needed. The mommy that can simply kiss any boo boo or hurt away. Instead, I am looking forward to new relationships with my ever growing children. I am enjoying them as they are now. Do I miss holding a baby in my arms or chasing after toddlers? I do sometimes, then I remember sleepless nights, van loads of baby gear and potty training. My mothering is not over, it has just taken on a new meaning. Just when I started to feel sorry for myself and a bit useless God comforted me with this word: And this I pray: that your love may abound yet more and more and extend to its fullest development in knowledge and all keen insight [that your love may display itself in greater depth of acquaintance and more comprehensive discernment]. Philippians 1: 9
Thank you God for showing me this through my little weeps and big prayers. My love for my children will not diminish nor their love for me, simply because they grow up and start new lives. They will need me for different reasons and I plan on being the best granny, let me tell ya! :)

I was reading a homeschool book called "a Mom Just Like You." I do not remember the author. I was in the middle of the book a while back when Cassie announced that she was not going on to higher college and planned on getting married and going right into ministry. I admit, I had different ideas. There was something in that book that stood out More than anything during that time- The author (she had 10 children) said she received this word from God: It is not our job to raise Godly children. (Say what? right?) She goes on to say this: God raises Godly Children, we guide them by being Godly role models! With that said, how can I tell my own child to go to school for another 4-6 years and have a career that she does not desire to have before marriage ,when I myself am a very happy and content homeschool mom and loving wife. I love my life and she sees that and wants that for herself. For that I am very proud and honored. I pray happiness for all my children no matter what their paths. I have peace knowing that Jesus is right there with them, even when I am not. It is comforting when I compare my relationship with God and my children. He was there with me as a baby christian K"issing away my boo boos and hurts" just as I was for my children when they were small, fast forward to present day and I still need him and he is still here for me. My relationship with him is as strong as ever. I am going to close with a scripture that is inspiring to me: Ephesians 1:18-19: That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you a spirit of wisdom and of reverence in the knowledge of Him. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the surpassing greatness of His power toward us who believe.

I know it has been awhile since I last posted. We have been very busy. I always get so anxious and excited for Spring to come, however I always seem to forget just how busy and crazy April is. :) I am going to talk more about about what's been going on in our busy lives in another post because I have not uploaded pics from my camera. ;)
I do want to mention what a delightful birthday I had however. My birthday fell on Easter this year, so Cassie wanted us to have a girls day the Saturday before. She took me out to Lunch, got my nails and eyebrows done, and bought me a nice dress for her engagement party. Of course I protested against all the extravagance, but she would hear none of it, bless her heart. It was so much fun!
My mom bought me what I have been desiring for some time. She bought me the Kreuig Coffee Maker. I LOVE it! She also surprised me and Bre with a beautiful cake and made a Delicious Easter Dinner! Ty and Bre made me breakfast in bed and lovely cards. Matt actually for the first time in almost 18 years forgot my birthday. He didn't forget, he just didn't realize that it was here already. :) hahaha. I was miffed, but I got over it. We plan on going out to my favorite restaurant next month since we have so much going on this month. We are going out to dinner tonight for a CAP ceremony. Breanna's birthday is tomorrow. We have HIM Co-op and Gym on Friday. We are going up north Saturday for another CAP ceremony. Sunday is Breanna's birthday party. :) Told you we are been busy. Monday: We had a great start for the week. I like everyone up on time and the morning chores done before school. Well, I think Ty is going through a growth spurt because he has been getting up later and later. I think it is important to "stick to the schedule" but I just read an article about letting the children sleep until they wake up naturally. I have found that when Ty gets up on his own he is a much better mood and is able to focus better on his schooling. I am all for that, however, I cannot wait until 11 am to get started. We do bible study and morning work together. One day Bre didn't want to wait and had all her school work done before Ty even got out of bed. Now, I know the mainstream educational "experts" would gasp at the idea of letting your child sleep in. :) I have seen the benefits of natural sleep myself, but I do have a limit. Anyhow, Monday morning without any prompting from me, TY woke up around 7:00am. I was one happy mama! I pray that he will make a habit of this. If not I will be howling at 9:30 every morning for him to get up and break his natural sleep. At least he doesn't have to get up at 6am to catch a bus. :)

I was supposed to go to Mom's Night Out with a bunch of fabulous homeschool moms at Panera Bread. But Matt had a job in Ithaca. Next Month, I am NOT missing it, even if I have to walk.

Tuesday: We had another great EARLY start on our day. WooHoo! I started the spaghetti sauce and meatballs in the crockpot before school and prepared the salad and such, so I wouldn't have much to do before the Pastors David and Nicole came over with their family for dinner. (I wrote about that in a previous blog) I am noticing more and more how much Bre enjoys homemaking and hosting. She helped prepare the tables and she truly enjoyed herself.

Wednesday: I gave the kids their morning work on a clip board while I did some laundry. Breanna was still working on it for about an hour after I thought she should have been done. She comes up to me and said she needed a mop. I said, "Why?, what spilled?" She said "my brain, it exploded about a half an hour ago!" Then she turned in her papers. Poor dear did a whole week and a half works of cursive, grammar and spelling! I didn't realize that I had attached that much to her clipboard. Oh, my. :)

Thursday: My friend Mandy had invited us to help make necklaces for Make-A-Wish along with a couple of other homeschool families. Her Daughter Becca, Bre's very good friend has had 5 heart surgeries and has surpassed what the Doctors expected her life expectancy to be. Isn't God AWESOME! Well, Mandy and Becca are still very involved with the Make A Wish Foundation and invited us along to help. We had a great time chatting and making necklaces. We did over 400 in only 2 1/2 hours! We took a tour of the building and did a small walk out to the pond afterwards. My heart goes out to those families that need MAW services. The strength and Faith they have is very inspiring and makes me appreciate all of our blessings and trials that much more.

Friday: Fridays are always crazy busy, however this Friday was the craziest ever. Cassie asked me if she could throw Josh a surprise birthday party here at the house. She said I wouldn't have to do anything. Well, I was already running around like a mad woman, when I got home, she didn't have anything prepared and it was already 4:00. She was taking Josh out to dinner and everyone would be here waiting for them when they got here. (with him blind folded of course) I only had an hour and a half to take a shower and get ready for LOF and pick up a bag of chips for LOF when I realized how much still needed to be done. I told Cassie I would take care of it-Just go! I figured I could skip the shower and still have enough time to go. Well, just after I finished putting the last dish on the food table and positioning the balloons, people already were showing up. I was a bit flustered and wasn't sure what I should do. I didn't want to leave the kids in charge and Matt had a retirement party to attend also. It was one of those days . I had Matt run the chips to Mandy at LOF and decided to stay here and "try" to host the party until Cassie got back. Josh has a LOT of family members. :) The house filled up pretty quickly and I soon forgot that I looked like a disaster. No really, I was up since 6am running around and going to Gym day and everything. It wasn't until I saw a picture on the digital camera, and I was mortified. Oh well. enough about that. I am so happy that I was able to spend some time getting to know Josh's family. They all are very funny and down to earth. Actually, I feel like I have known them my whole life. You ever meet someone like that? His whole family is like that. Cassie called me on their way back here from Red Lobster to let me know they were on their way back (out of ear shot of josh) so everyone scrambled into the Kitchen to yell "Surprise!" I will post pictures soon. After all the hugs and birthday wishes, Josh said he had an announcement to make. I noticed his hands shaking, and I knew! They are officially engaged! So, I guess the surprise was on us!! I though he was going to wait until summer. :) Now, I have to tell you I was a bit woozy and emotional. I know they are great together and will have an awesome Godly marriage. BUT that's my BABY! :) I am happy for them and sad for me. I am being very emotional. Matt is so calm and everyone else seemed to think this is the most perfect thing to happen. I am still a little annoyed with Matt for being so calm about it. :) However, Josh's mom had that same look as I and we both cried:out of happiness and sadness. I immediately felt better. Not at her expense, but because I wasn't just being an emotional basketcase for no reason. Matt said with all his logic, at least she will not be going out into the world or marrying a non christian. Josh is a very nice guy with motivation and I know he will treat her very well. with that said, I am excited for my daughters soon to be (a year)adventure in life. I have posted much to long about my emotional state. Please forgive me. :) This is a new phase in life that I did not think would happen so soon.

Saturday: We had the Garlocks over for dinner. Now, they are gluten,dairy and meat free like so many other of our friends. We have been talking about becoming gluten free for some time because of allergies, IBS and just to be healthier. So I figured this would be a good learning experience for us. I make a mean homemade macaroni and cheese dish. So, I figured I would just substitute the dairy for non-dairy and the noodles with non-gluten noodles. I also made a salad, gluten free banana bread ,organic applesauce and steamed veggies. Well, the Mac and Cheese was HORRIBLE. It tasted like cardboard to say the least. I am so grateful that the Garlocks were very gracious and we just loaded it with salt. We had good laugh over it. Joya gave me some good tips also, for next time. Overall, we had a great time. Jeremy gave Ty drum lessons while the girls played together and Joya and I chatted. They are such a lovely family. It is such a blessing to have so many great christian friends come into our lives. We are going to get together over spring break for some fun!

Sunday: My moms's birhtday!! We went to Church and then straight to my moms. We had a great time over pizza. We left there after a few hours to come home and get ready for the church's 5th year anniversary celebration with the Chris Hopper Band. Whew, it was awesome!! That word doesn't even come close to just how good they are! I had to purchase one of their cd's. I wish I could have gotten them all, but I only had enough cash on me to get one. It was really cool, when he came up to us and said to me "I had my eye on you, you are a true Worshiper of God!!" I was very blessed by that. We had cake and punch and called it a night. I am going to use their Cd for our morning worship. Well, we sure did have a busy week huh? Spring-Fall usually are like this. It feels good after such a long quite winter.

Last Night

Our Pastors came over for dinner last night. I was SO nervous, I'm not sure why, maybe because we never had Pastors over before. Anyway, I had no reason to be nervous, they both are the nicest and most down to earth people I have ever met. We even have the same taste in cheesecake. lol. I bought a fancy cheesecake at walmart and carefully took it off their platter and put it in my super fancy one. Wouldn't you know, Pastor Nicole walks in with the same one!!

They have three children and two of them are the same ages as Ty and Bre. Their youngest son Josiah is a sweetheart that brightens any room that he enters.

We feel so blessed to have had them over and it was nice to get to know them better. Our old church was so large that I honestly never had a conversation with our pastor in all the years that we attended. I now know we made the right decision in leaving. I love that church, but it was time for us to move on. Cassie , Ty and Josh trying out for the worship team Thursday.
That's all for now, we are getting ready to start our day. I was looking online the other day for next years curriculum and had about 15 books in my cart, when I thought " I better do an inventory of what is on my shelves first." The reason I thought that is because I brought home books from the library Friday and found that I already owned two of them!
It turns out that I do not need as much as I thought for next year, I have most everything I need. I do have to get Math for Bre and Literature for Ty. I think I am going to stick with Bob Jones Math for Bre for one more year before I switch her over to Saxon. I also think I am going to sit down one day or two to input all of our curriculum, Literature and games in my homeschool tracker database. I didn't use it much this year, but now I see that if I had taken the time to input my resources I could have saved time and money. I bought the upgrade and I do not see that much difference, however, I suppose it depends on your homeschool needs. Please pray for the Fried Family. Their son died suddenly last week at the age of 17. He was a much loved and likable young man that also helped his parents with their business. They have been clients of Matt's for years and our hearts go out to them. This scripture comes to mind: The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Psalm 34:18)
Please pray for peace and comfort for the entire Fried family and all the friends that were blessed to know Justin.

Monday:Finished up Civil War Unit. Tylor and Breanna were able to delineate The Civil War with ease. If they were unable to give such details in their writing and narratives I would have included one or two more resources. I am finding more and more that they do much better and retain much more with unit studies versus textbook. I still use their textbooks as a resource, just not as a whole.

Tuesday: Nice and Normal school day.

Wednesday: Started out Egyptian Unit. Completed all lessons around 3:00 with a long break for lunch. Ty and Matt had CAP.

Thursday: Another great school day. We went to Church for a healing conference.

Friday: Chiropractor, shopping, library and Gym day. It was nice to sit and chat with Becky (Finally!) in the nursery. Matt and I went out to Red Lobster and watched Frost/Nixon.

Saturday: Cass and Ty went with Josh to visit his family in the country. They played paintball and went four-wheeling. Bre played outside with her friends all day while I happily did some cleaning. Matt gave his commencement speech for the current ITT Grads! He did a great job. I will post the video when I get a chance. (yes, of course I tapped it!)

Sunday: Matt had a CAP class in Rochester so we missed church. Cass took Bre out to lunch and shopping and then dropped her off at her friend's birthday party. Ty and I did some yard work and cleaned off the deck. I let Ty for the first time in his life ride his bike to the gas station for some goodies. This was a big step for me because he has to cross over a Major intersection. See, I am really working on letting go a bit. He is after all 14, almost 15. They grow up SO fast! I am planning Breanna's 10th birthday for next month. Last year she had her party at the Bowling Place. This year she wants it at home. Fine with Me! She wants a horse theme. She is very into Horses and Zebras. Should be Fun!

Our Week at a Glance

Monday: Normal school routine. Bre is getting very good at drawing Zebra's. I will post pictures soon. She flew through her lessons so she could spend time drawing wild life. Monday's are difficult for Ty to get back into routine, however, he completed all of his assignment independently with a few math exceptions.

Tuesday: Normal School Routine, nothing really to blog about. We are almost finished with our Civil War Unit, we should be done by the end of next week. Tylor whizzed through his lessons like he usually does Tues.-Friday. :) Bre put on a talent show and I almost peed my pants it was so funny.

Wednesday:We finished school around 2:30. Ty had Civil Air Patrol.

Thursday: We finished school around 1:30, went shopping and did some errands. Ty had Youth. Played Clue with Bre like 150 times. She loves that game.

Friday: Chiropractor, half day of school (just the basics) Gym: the kids are doing Basketball and Karate right now. I think next week is the end of the 6 week session before they begin Cardio and something else. I will have to look in the program because I cannot remember for the life of me at the moment. We finished our running around with the Library.
There you have it, a very quite and productive week. I remember the days of complete chaos. You know, school in the van while we cart the kids to one activity or sporting practice to the next.
Spring is in the air, so I am anticipating some more busyness. That's ok, as long as we have a season of rest. and we all aren't stressed out. I now know the signs of too much craziness and will put a halt to it immediately if need be. :)

Saturday: I plan on Cleaning and shopping. Bre is having a friend over to watch the new iCarly program. Ty is going to the mall with friends.Matt is doing a radio class with CAP and Cassie will be going to a Birthday Party for Josh's mom.

Sunday: Church and The Pastor and his family are coming over for diner.

I also want to include Cassie in our weekly updates, it is just that she is not here during the day. She is so busy between school work and nannying that we only get to see her a few hours a day. We stayed up late one night just catching up. Josh came over Thursday to hang out and had a nice chat with him also.

I use Power Media Plus for Tylor regarding educational videos. There are literally hundreds of great videos for every subject. In most cases, there are lesson plans, tests, and worksheets you can print out to go with the video. Bre uses this also, I was mentioning Ty because the library doesn't have many educational titles for his grade level.

Matt scanned some old family pictures, so I thought I would share them. It is fun to look back and remember those times. I still cannot believe how young we were when we got married. Our oldest is older than we were, and we still see her as our baby! I have always desired to be a mom and a teacher. How awesome is God that he gave me the grace to be a Homeschool Mom? I am so happy with my life, my husband and my children that I could not even imagine any other lifestyle. I believe that motherhood is the most important "career" a woman could ever be so blessed to have. Times were not always easy peasy and I remember when Matt had three jobs and went to school while I was being tutored at home because morning(more like 24 hour) sickness made me too ill to go tot school. I remember our little apartment and I remember eating peanut butter out of a jar because we didn't have enough grocery money. God's best plan for us? Maybe not, but he sure did make it our best. Matt joined the Army soon after Cassie was born and has worked hard ever since to provide for our family and I have worked hard making our home a loving, fun and relaxing home. I take my life as a mom and wife seriously. I am not a microwave mom, I do not send my kids to school so someone else can "deal" with them. I am not in any way judging moms that need to work out side of home. It just burns me up when someone says to me..."you could have been... (fill in the blank)" I say that I am exactly as God has designed me to be and I am very happy as well as my husband and children! I couldn't ask for more and count my blessing each and every day. Somehow, my idea of a happy, cheerful, walk down memory lane blog entry turned into a rant so I am going to close here with a few pictures from the past. :)

What is Civil Air Patrol?
Civil Air Patrol is a non-profit volunteer organization for people ages 12 and up. It consists of three primary missions: Cadet Programs, Aerospace Education, and Emergency Services. CAP currently has 64,000 members, over 27,000 of those being cadets. Civil Air Patrol offers hundreds of opportunities that cannot be found anywhere else.
What are the Cadet Programs?
CAPs cadet program has more than 27,000 members, ages 12 to 21. The cadet programs are credited with teaching the importance of personal integrity, accountability, self-discipline, and respect for others to the nation's youth. The cadet programs offer an immense amount of resources and activities for your children. Our goal is to instill integrity, teamwork, self-discipline, respect, initiative, and responsibility while building leadership and self-confidence in the cadets. Some of the activities offered includes the National Flight Academy (your child could solo in two weeks for less than half the price of taking flying lessons anywhere else), Cadet Officer School (the top minds in leadership, strategic/critical/creative thinking, speaking/writing, and many other fields speak and teach here; if the course provided was taken anywhere outside of CAP, it would easily add up into the tens of thousands of dollars), and the International Air Cadet Exchange (cadets 17 years of age or older can apply for this activity and be selected to travel to different countries and act as ambassadors). These are but three of the many activities provided through the CAP cadet programs. The things your child could learn and accomplish in the cadet programs are simply amazing.
Why should my child be a part of the cadet programs?
CAP offers a vast amount of resources for the youth of today. Senior members work alongside the cadets, ensuring that they learning the valuable skills necessary to become a leader in today's world. Experienced cadets who are familiar with the program are there to assist the cadets in anyway they need, building in them the values and skills they learned as younger cadets, while building their own leadership skills through practice. I am posting this now because I know I will be way to tired tomorrow night.
Monday: Normal HS day - Bre was sick with a sore throat and cold so she did most of her work on the coach and watched The Harriet Tubman movie
Tuesday-Bre made a very cool shadow box project on Abraham Lincoln. I will post pictures later. Normal HS day.
Wednesday- I started feeling sick with a sore throat and cold and rank my standard cure of 2 tbs 2x a day of apple cider vinegar. Yes it is gross, but it does work. Ty had to study for his CAP test along with his normal school work. He is getting very good at working independently. This is a huge thing for us, trust me. Ty adn Bre went for a walk with some friends and had a mini picnic. Yes, it is cold, but nice enough to not wear gloves and a scarf. Cabin Fever is a terrible thing to have. One must get out even if only for awhile.
Thursday- I was feeling better this morning but had to take Bre to Dr. for follow up for asthma, RiteAid, Office MAx and PetCo/ On the way home I remembered that I had some books to return to the Library. Ended up getting more books and stayed for over an hour. I had to pry the kids out of there. This is a good thing. There was a day when they hated to go to the library-back when we first started homeschooling. Ty finished his first draft on the Civil War. Bre wrote in her journal. Honestly we did not get allot done today as far as the standard book work, but, hey the Library counts for something right? :) I feel very sick and achy Right now. I cannot breathe out of my nose and it hurts to breathe from my mouth because my throat hurts. I was complaining about it (like I am now) when Bre said, "yeah, try having a bad cold when you have asthma." I quickly stopped complaining. Point Taken. Period. Today was another"nice" winter day. The kids took a walk and hung out next door for awhile.
Tomorrow- Chiropractor and Co-0p with an IMAX movie at the end. I am also invited to go to another book club but with the way I am feeling right now, I doubt I will be able to go. I am sure after a full day at co-op I am going to be wornout. I also have to help Ty pack for his weekend trip for bivwack. It's for CAP and he has to sleep outside in a tent with other cadets. I am such a mother, I keep having horrible visions of him freezing to death. My husband who is also going is assuring me that cadets have been going for twenty years with no casualties as of yet. He also told me to stop coddling him. Again, Point Taken, Of course he said it very nicely but I get the drift. Ty is my only boy and I do tend to coddle all my children because I love them so much. Not so much as to suffocate them mind you, I am just what Cassie call a PARENTNOID. When I feel myself going over the edge of paranoia to never return. I pray. It is such a relief to know that God is with them protecting them even when I am not. Trust me I have loosened up ALLOT!
I know it is our duty as parents to TRAIN them up, and let them go. It is just hard sometime, that's all. I love my life and my family so much. I was just wondering what I was going to do when they are all grown and on their own, what I am going to do with myself. I had a moment of nothingness and then I realized I have allot that I am going to do. Matt and I are going to travel together. Also, Cassie said that she wants me to Homeschool her future kids. How sweet. That was such a blessing to hear. Ok, I think the Tylenol Severe Cold has gone to my head-literally because I am carrying on so. I think I will reread this tomorrow and Will have to do some editing. :)

Menu Plan Monday 2/22-2/28

I have been menu planning for years. Now, there have been a few weeks now and then that I did not plan weekly menus in advance. Those times were stressful and chaotic and I do not like to wonder what I am making for dinner, and wonder if I have enough ingredients. I usually write out my shopping list on Thursday's for the following week. I do not like to shop on Saturdays (too crowded and noisy) However, we are down a vehicle and I go when I can, which has been Saturdays. I like to go on Thursday afternoons because it is less crowded and I can take my time. I like to comparison shop and get the best deals. Before I started menu planning our grocery bill was HUGE. Now I spend a reasonable and comfortable amount that even my husband is pleased with. I have a magnetic Meal Planner on the fridge with a tear off shopping list. This makes life much easier because I used to type it out and print it out every week. Now all I do is fill in the blanks and take my shopping list to the store. I decided that like other homeschool/homemaker bloggers I am going to post my weekly meals every Monday. If you would like help meal planning, go to the website above. SO,whaat about Socialization?

Concerns about the social disadvantages of homeschooling are usually related to one of the following questions:
1. How will your child learn to stand in line, raise his hand before speaking, take turns, etc.?
My children learn good social skills as we live our lives together. We stand in line at the grocery store, we greet our neighbors, and we take turns letting each other speak. I coach my children in their day-to-day interactions, and they also learn from watching me.
My children may never perfect the art of waving their hands in the air, shouting "me, me - pick me," and they may never learn the phrase, “no cuts, no buts, no interrupts,” but they will know how to behave properly in social settings.
2. How will your child learn to handle bullies?
When was the last time you were physically threatened, taunted, groped or sexually harassed? I haven’t experienced any of the above since I graduated from high school.
School creates a perfect environment for bullying and victimization. Children who are bullied don’t learn to handle bullies, they learn to tolerate being bullied. Those who can't tolerate it suffer terribly, sometimes hurting themselves or others.
As an adult I have had to deal with difficult people, but I have never been forced to endure daily taunting or physical assault, nor have I had to interact with those who would engage in such behavior.
Homeschooling and socialization allows parents to shield their children from negative encounters until they have developed the self-confidence and maturity to handle them.
3. How will your child learn to be around different types of people?
Public school students spend their days in a room with children who are their same age, socioeconomic status and, more often than not, race. These children quickly learn that older kids do not play with younger kids, girls don't play with boys, rich kids don't play with poor kids, and so on.
As an adult I don’t sit in a room full of other thirty three year olds, taunting the person next to me because she has a big nose and wears glasses. I don't want my children on the giving or receiving end of that unsocial behavior.
One of the biggest myths about homeschooling and socialization is that children are cooped up with their parents and siblings all day. In the course of a week, my children participate in many activities outside of our home. School is an artificial environment. Real life encounters teach children to appreciate diversity.
4. How will your child make friends/learn to be a good friend?
I recently read a book called, Hold On to Your Kids, which greatly encouraged me in this area.
According to Hold On to Your Kids, early peer relationships cause disrespect, bullying, victimization, rebellion and other undesirable behaviors in children. The authors, Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate, believe children need relationships with loving adults – not other children.As an adult, I model respect, kindness, selflessness and other traits my children need to be good friends. I have never understood the concept of sending kids to school to learn how to treat each other. How can someone who doesn’t know how to share teach my child to be a good friend?
5. What about homeschooling and socialization?
To quote the late, Dr. Raymond Moore:
“Does anyone who knows children, believe that the yellow school bus takes children down the road to a constructive, positive sense of society? Or returns them in the afternoon or evening more loving creatures than when they left in the morning?"
I think we all know the answer to that question.
